Really simple but nice game, I like your use of the ZX-spectrum colour palette but perhaps searching for a ZX-spectrum colour palette on lospec.com will make the colours of the game fit quite better. I think letting a player know for the first time which level their in is a great idea but just once would be okay, it got really annoying having to restart a game and getting ready to play when the game pauses for a some seconds just to remind you again of the level you're in. It's all part of the learning process, I'm learning too. Besides these little issues great game

Its fun to die? Yeah I really like the sounds and death effect.

Completed the game, "he" is in control though

  • No gamepad support (which is pretty mandatory for a platformer)
  • With no gamepad support, I (and many players, I guess) are still used to control movement with left hand (WASD) and jumping with a separate button (Space), so you can allow both AD and Left/Right-arrows to move and all: W and Up-arrow and Space to jump
  • At the moment both Up-arrow and W jump, but W also plays extra sound - strange
  • Let player restart immediately (or with very short delay) - don't block player after death for a second (when you show "level N")
  • Blocks from the sky fall at random, sometimes at such moments that you can't react and save yourself, making it feel unfair to the player, which is not critical in short levels like these, but will be much more frustrating with longer levels, when restarting a level just because of bad luck would be very frustrating
  • It is not immediately clear you can double jump - put it on screen before you need to perform it
  • Green-collectibles and portals are put in such a way, that it's easy to enter a portal and not notice a collectible. I had to restart level 3 when I "completed" it, because I missed a green-thing near portal entrance
